Smudging For Beginners

Smudging For Beginners

One of the most common questions I receive is the question about the use of sage to clear and uplift the energies of space and does it have to always be used to clear entities. Truth is, Sage, burning, or smudging has its roots in Native American culture and other cultures around the world. For centuries, people around the world have incorporated smudging into their spiritual practices to help cleanse their surroundings. From purification and cleansing to temporarily removing low-level entities simply by raising the energetic frequencies of your space, smudging has a multitude of benefits, many of which are scientifically proven.

Smudging Benefits

There are several benefits of smudging that include the following:

-Mood-Boosting
-Improving Cognition
-Reducing bacteria and microbes in the air
-Relieving symptoms of allergens like mold and pet dander by neutralizing positive ions

Smudging can also ease insomnia to help you get a better night’s sleep. The uplifting fragrance can be a benefit to your mental and emotional state. Research from the University of Mississippi suggests that burning white sage can activate the receptors in the brain that are responsible for reducing stress and pain.

Aside from purifying the physical realm and boosting your health, smudging can help you remove psychic energies that you do not wish to have in your space. It is a powerful spiritual tool that can clear the energy field of your home of any unwanted entities. Many people also use the smudging technique to purify second-hand objects that they bring home to clear any energies that may be connected to those objects. Smudging can also clear your personal energy field by removing metaphysical weight and emotional blocks.

How To Start Smudging

You won’t need many tools to begin smudging. All you need is a sage bundle, a seashell or ceramic bowl, matches, and a feather or paper fan. You can decide which sage you would like to use for your cleansing ritual. There are four traditional types of sage you can use:

-White Sage (Salvia apiana)
-Other species of Salvia
-White prairie sage (Artemisia ludoviciana)
-Other species of Artemisia

Starting at your front door, light the sage and fan the smoke counterclockwise. Go from left to right as you say the following decree. Keep in mind that you don’t need to produce a lot of smoke for the smudging to be successful.

Calling Upon the Angels to Cleanse and Purify
“I call upon the 100,000 angels of the light, Archangel Michael, Mother Mary, and Source Presence to come in and cleanse, uplift, purify, and remove any low-frequency energies from this space. Cleanse, close, seal, and block with this smoke, this element. Raise the frequency, raise the light, and remove any and all spirits, any emotional or metaphysical weight and debris that resides within my personal energetic field or my sacred space. Cleanse and clear; neutralize and seal this sacred space. Purify and uplift the frequencies.”

Simply repeat this process as you move through your space to clear your home and remove metaphysical weight from your energy field. Once you are finished, be sure to dab the burnt end of the smudge stick into the bowl to put it out.

This is simply the process that I have always used, but it must not be understated that your intention is key. If you have another process that you wish to use while smudging, then use it. There is no right or wrong way to set your space, connect to your intuition and trust your internal process. I only add my process for those who wish to have a reference point.
